About the Film

About the Film
"December 6" is a short poetry dance film set to "14 (for December 6)," a spoken word commentary by Evalyn Parry about societal and media responses to violence against women, with the 20th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre* as the central focus. The film includes performances from 14 female dancers, showcasing a variety of world dance traditions, symbolizing that violence against women can happen to any woman, anywhere.

*The Montreal Massacre: On December 6, 1989, an armed man walked into L'Ecole Polytechnique, a school for engineering at the University of Montreal. He murdered 14 women shouting, "I hate feminists." This film is dedicated to those 14 women...

Cara Mumford

"December 6" is Métis filmmaker Cara Mumford's third independent short film and her first film funded by the Canada Council for the Arts. Cara regards film as visual poetry and strives to provide empowerment for her viewers by shifting their perceptions of specific topics and events. Her previous film, "echoes", was an attempt to contextualize the post 9/11 world by exploring the echoes of past atrocities. It won Best Underground Film at the chashama Film Festival in New York City.

echoes
In an age when war seems to be spreading like a plague, this short poetry dance film is one woman's response to the events of 9/11.

Coda in G Minor
Coda (n): "A new theme introduced at the end of a musical composition to emphasise the sense of finality." What many people don't realize, however, is that every life has a coda, too.

Evalyn Parry

Songwriter, poet and ironic social commentator Evalyn Parry is gifted with a sharp pen, a quirky musical sensibility and a wicked sense of humour. “Equally funny and dangerous” (CBC Radio), “parry breathes new life into the folk tradition with her politics, passion and poetry” (Penguin Eggs). Evalyn’s outspoken, personal and political creations hold out a powerful vision of social change, while her irreverent wit holds nothing sacred. Her newest CD is entitled Small Theatres.
